L’Harrier è probabilmente il più celebre aereo militare con caratteristiche V/STOL (decollo e atterraggio verticale e/o corto) della storia. Progettato e sviluppato, nel corso degli anni sessanta, dall’azienda britannica Hawker Siddeley, l’Harrier ha partecipato attivamente alle operazioni militari durante la guerra delle Falkland / Malvinas nel 1982. Più in dettaglio, l’Harrier Gr. 3, caratterizzato dall’adozione di nuovi sensori per il puntamento dei bersagli installati nel muso e da nuovi sistemi di contromisure elettroniche integrati, fu molto efficace nelle missioni di supporto ravvicinato e attacco al suolo. Armato con 2 cannoni da 30 mm installati sotto la fusoliera, era in grado di trasportare un significativo carico offensivo composto da razzi, bombe convenzionali e a guida laser. L’Harrier Gr. 3 poteva inoltre essere equipaggiato con due serbatoi subalari in grado di estenderne l’autonomia ed il raggio di azione.
